Oral Surgery
Oral surgery refers to any surgical procedure performed on the mouth, jaw, teeth, or surrounding tissues to treat various dental conditions or injuries. These procedures are typically more complex than standard dental treatments and may require sedation. Oral surgery is often necessary when other treatments are not effective or when more advanced intervention is required. Oral surgery is typically performed by a specialist called an oral surgeon. These professionals are trained to handle complex dental and facial surgical procedures, ensuring that patients receive the necessary care for their specific conditions. At our practice, we closely collaborate with our oral surgeon, Dr. Edgar Navarrete, to provide proper surgical care.
Common types of oral surgery include:
-
Tooth Extractions: Removing a tooth that is severely decayed, damaged, or impacted (such as wisdom teeth) to prevent further complications.
-
Dental Implants: Inserting an artificial tooth root into the jawbone to replace missing teeth. This procedure requires surgery to place the implant and allow it to integrate with the bone.
-
Cyst or Tumor Removal: Removing growths or cysts in the mouth, jaw, or surrounding tissues to prevent them from affecting oral health or causing further complications.
-
Bone Grafting: A procedure to add bone material to the jaw to strengthen it, often done in preparation for dental implants or to repair damage from tooth loss or injury.
-
Soft Tissue Surgery: Involves surgical correction of gum tissue problems, such as removing excess tissue.
